JOE'S POKER NITE is not a serious, smoky room and scowling men in visors event. It is a joyful gathering of a rotating collective of San Francisco artists, performers, and activists, playing a repertory of mostly house-created card games with playful, subversive, or satirical themes. Joe started this ritual after becoming widowed at the age of 30 during the early years of the AIDS crisis, and it has been going ever since, creating community and beauty out of tragedy.
Joe Casserly is a San Francisco-based performer, conceptual artist, and the creator of Joe’s Poker Nite.
Poker Nite is many things! Just some of the ways Poker Nite is described in the film include: hilarious, a hell of a lot of fun, predictable, and unpredictable. In a nutshell, Poker Nite is a joyous gathering of a rotating collective of local artists, activists, and performers sharing a monthly evening of silliness bonding, while perched on memorably tiny chairs around a small folding poker table in a Lower Haight apartment.
